Want to be a Mechanic?
The Knowledge of:
- Machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.

Practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
The Ability to:
- Arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).
- Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
- Imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.
- Bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
- Detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness.
- Quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
- Keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
- Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
- Match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.
Tasks:
- Align vehicles' front ends.
- Confer with customers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
- Disassemble units and inspect parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
- Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions.
- Install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
- Overhaul or replace carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
- Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
- Plan work procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
- Rebuild parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks.
- Repair and service air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling, and electrical systems.
Career paths for Mechanics
Typically a hard-working mechanic will be promoted to team leader or a manager position after a few years on the job. Most auto mechanic managers are grouped together into a geographic region which is led by a district manager. An ambitious and successful mechanic may be able to move into this high-level management role after working as a team leader.
